Progression is slow statistically, but if you're unlocking new weapon abilities, really diving into skill trees to make combos feel more organic, there's no reason combat should feel monotonous - especially compared to a souls game where all you is dodge or block. Some environments from the first game are reused and redone in side missions, and the DLC has reimagined versions of some of the bigger bosses from the first game. But then after that all ~35 main missions are new, all ~35 main bosses are new. I mean.the core gameplay and stance systems are the same, as you'd expect in any sequel, and some enemy types carry over. Honestly I just can't understand this opinion at all. The game gives you avenues to basically nonstop regenerate stamina through technical play, so if you want to play the closest thing to Ninja Gaiden since, well, Ninja Gaiden, you can play the game like that as well.Īnd if you want to just do combat challenges and boss rushes endgame content allows for this as well. The game gives you 11 weapons and you can swap between any two at once, each of which will have 3 stances, each stance of which will have its own weak and strong attacks, and have their own skills and stuff which you can assign and customize the properties of. As you unlock higher difficulties this becomes a bit more essential, but this aspect can be entirely ignored basically for the base game.Īnd if you want to play the game less as a soulslike or a looter, but more like a character action game, you can do that as well. as well.īut if you want something that feels closer to diablo, you can start collecting loot, taking it to the blacksmith, tweaking properties of loot and finding synergies between different pieces of gear and creating sorts of builds. Magic and Ninjutsu feel like souls spells etc. That experience is basically just a souls game. Go for a weapon like sword, axe, spear, stick to the default weapon stance, and play the game just dodging enemy attacks and getting a hit in here and there. If you want an experience that is basically just samurai souls, you can easily do that. To clarify, the amazing thing about Nioh/2 is that it's like several games in one and you can play it however you want. I really like Sword.įor others jumping in with 2, this playlist from Poofer is probably the pretty comprehensive bible: Don't forget you can block!įists can trivialize human bosses. They really stepped up the music.Īlso a lot of bosses have very hard to dodge attacks that can deal a lot of damage. Listen to the OST, at least on your first playthrough. Side missions are largely useless except for the ones for the blacksmith, and even then the features these unlock are only really useful for NG+ or tbh ++.Īll the bosses in Nioh 2 are basically good, and a lot of them are great. This is why yokai boss hp pools feel massive - as the fight goes on generally you'll start doing more and more damage. Reducing maximum ki is the general goal of all yokai bosses - the more you keep pressuring that, even if they regain it, you'll find yourself putting them into break states more and more often. On top of that onmyo magic has talismans which help further.ĭark realm lets you generate anima extremely quickly - this is generally so that you can pressure bosses in the dark realm with abilities to either keep them staggered or reduce their maximum ki. Brute is very slow, Phantom can do ranged stuff, but both felt notably more situational.įrom the shiftling tree get the skills which reduce the ki penalty in the dark realm. Yokai shift forms - feral is probably the best. Phantom requires the most precise timing but can be used with parry timing. Brute has a little delay and shortish reach I've found but is very much a press it and forget it kind of thing. All of these make it easier to manage ki.īurst counters differ depending on if you're using brute, phantom, or feral form. Get the bread and butter stuff immediately. You might hit some walls playing it just like Nioh 1 and not using all the full suite of mechanics, so barrage the thread for help if you need it. I am currently making my way through Dream of the Nioh difficulty and the game just continues to expand in ever crazy directions the more you play it. It's probably the best action game ever made.
